The more experienced I become in helping people change their lifestyle habits, the more I realise the importance of adherence. Fitness, in a nutshell, is about consistency. Each plan works to a degree, but the greatest plan is worthless if it can’t be followed.
The most intelligent, beautifully-crafted program gathers dust on the shelf like anything else if you can’t do it. Thus makes adherence a really important, if not the MOST important, part of a mind-set change.
If you think it’s always going to be easy, enjoyable and rewarding you are deluded. Sometimes I hate it, I really hate it. At times I have left the gym and thought that still wasn’t worth it, I feel worse than when I went in. However, I know what I have to do in the long run to make a difference. Sometimes I miss sessions, sometimes I have bad weeks. All irrelevant to the bigger picture. I enjoy it much more than I hate it, I feel rewarded more often than not, and over a year I am definitely making progress.
People flip out at the slightest ‘failure’. They have one bad day and want to burn the house down. To me discipline is being able to carry on regardless of setbacks. Yeah, sometimes the cake wasn’t worth it, but most of the time it really is. The difference is not going on a 4 week food bender because of one piece of cake. If you can turn your mind-set round to understanding adherence, changing your lifestyle becomes much, much, much easier.
