So what are those revolutionary ways to change everything? Well, I half expected myself to write “there aren’t any, it’s just consistency, discipline and commitment.” But there are some things I couldn’t live without.
Number one is a stopwatch.
It can become really easy to get distracted in a gym or even on your own and let time fly by. The longer you rest (in most cases) the less adaption you are going to get and you are at risk of losing efficiency. Keep the rest times low and push on. I tend to use my phone, but don’t do that if you are going to shoot off some texts in between sets. Be disciplined.
Number two is a training partner.
It can be a lonely place at times, and if your training has plateaued, it may be time to find someone else to keep you going. Try to pick someone with a similar ability and try to out-perform each other. However, never be a hindrance, don’t distract each other. You are there to work and if you want to be efficient and keep time training to a minimum, then stay committed to what you set out to do.
Number three is, in my opinion, the most important. Schedule time out to train.
If you just ‘go when you can’ at some point you will fall off. Many New Year dieters will do exactly this – go when work/kids/friends/partners aren’t there. It has to be a priority whilst the habits set. Yes of course there is flexibility, but find a time you can do now, and keep it that way. Don’t sacrifice it for something else, because in the long run nobody will thank you for that. Stay scheduled, stay consistent.
Above all else you have to enjoy it. Sometimes you have to dig deep and do the things you don’t enjoy so much, but if you are going to do a programme you don’t enjoy or even dread, then it’s time to shake things up.
